I'm having the same issue. In a specific .mkv file, about 40 seconds in (and if I skip that, again 1:40 and 2:30 minutes in) the player crashes with the message 'Aborted'. ?field.comment=I'm having the same issue. I've attached a partial backtrace of the thread invoking abort(). Unfortunately, I've been unable to find the package supplying debug information for /usr/lib/libavcodec.so.52.

Replacing package libavcodec-extra-53 by libavcodec52 moves the issue to a different timeframe, but does not remove it.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. A new version of GStreamer is available on Maverick and we are wondering if this bug is still an issue for you with that version? Could you please test and comment back? Thanks in advance.

I'd postponed the maverick upgrade to this weekend, since I didn't have much time last.

I can confirm the issue (at least in my case) seems to have disappeared with the maverick upgrade. No crashes in the first 10 minutes of that video file.

The following comment from the GStreamer Base Plug-ins 0.10.31 release notes may be relevant:

* typefinding: detect avc1 ftyp as video/quicktime

This should appear in the Ubuntu 11.04 "Natty Narwhal" archives soon. When it does I encourage Kemel to download the Ubuntu 11.04 "Natty Narwhal" alpha 1 LiveCD and then upgrade gst-plugins-base0.10 to version 0.10.31 and test if this fixes the problem.

Also, the newly released GStreamer Good Plug-ins 0.10.26 might help. From the release notes:

Bugs fixed in this release

* 620790 : [matroskademux] general stream error when trying to play certain .mkv file

That's a GNOME bug number - the corresponding bug report is at http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=620790

This package should soon make it's way into the Ubuntu 11.04 "Natty Narwhal" repositories (you can monitor this at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gst-plugins-good0.10 ).
