Bug Description

If I set playback with repeat on, playback still pauses after two songs for me in rhythmbox. It pauses at the start of a song, but the controls show it's still playing (i.e. the "pause" button is there for me to pause the song, rather than the "play" button). If I click the slider anywhere in the timeline of the song, playback continues. If I leave things playback will resume after some time (maybe five minutes or so), but will be stutter-y and jump ahead in songs.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better, however the report is missing some information, may you
please run rhythmbox as: rhythmbox --debug &> rhythmbox-debug.txt ;
perform the steps to reproduce the bug and attach that resulting log
file to the report? Thanks in advance!.

I notice in your log that your music collection is a mix of ogg and mp3. Could this be the same as bug 921071 or bug 969855?

Yep, I believe this is a duplicate of bug 921071 (can reproduce by going from mp3 -> ogg) but the suggested solution of enabling crossfade doesn't seem to work for me.

Otus (jan-varho) wrote :

I can reproduce 100% of the time and crossfade doesn't help. Playback sometimes continues after a while (3-4 minutes in the most recent case I saw) and the song jumps to a position close to where it would have been if it had been playing from the beginning.

The following transitions cause a pause:
  mp3->ogg
  mp3->flac
  ogg->flac
  flac->ogg

These do not:
  ogg->mp3
  flac->mp3

I don't have other media types in the library to test with.

Just marked my bug a duplicate. I also have a mixture of different formats. MP3, OGG, WAV, and others.

I have the same bug and observe exactly what Otus reported.

I also have this problem. I can confirm Otus' findings on what transitions cause the hang.

If I enable crossfade, instead of hanging indefinitely on transition, there's about a 5-10 second hang, then Rhythmbox skips partway into the next song and carries on as normal.

I just could reproduce the mistake in a fresh install of 12.04 amd64:

  ogg->mp3

I thing bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/978604 deals with the same problem.

kde - player amarok has the same problem.

in syslog i find:

pulseaudio[1900]: [alsa-sink] ratelimit.c: 56 events suppressed
pulseaudio[1900]: [alsa-sink] protocol-native.c: Failed to push data into queue

sound in 11.04 was ok.

I can also confirm this problem. I have also a mixture off mp3 and ogg files.
With Ubuntu 11.10 it works fine.

I can confirm that this did not happen on 11.10 with the same music collection. I have ogg, mp3, and wma.

I experience the same bug on a fresh 12.04 i386 install. My music collection consists of MP3 and OGG Files. As described the bug manifests itself, wenn an MP3-file is followed by an OGG file.

Undupping, it's not clear they are the same issue since bug #978604 happens without format change

Could somebody having the issue report the bug upstream: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=rhythmbox

Including a rhythmbox --debug and maybe a GST_DEBUG=:5 rhythmbox log when getting the issue could be useful

I am using amarok - kde player and can reproduce the bug when changing from mp3 to ogg.

So I think the problem comes from pulseaudio or deeper.

I doubt PA has anything to do with it, but gstreamer might. In any case, does the upstream link mean this is no longer incomplete?

the rhythmbox upstream asked for a "GST_DEBUG=*:3 rhythmbox -D player" log of the issue, note that bug #978604 which is similar is opened against pulseaudio
