Bug Description

Currently is Totem Gstreamer able display ASS subtitles only under one codition, if they are muxed inside matroska (MKV) container.. At first sight, this could be Gstreamer issue, but it is not. Gstreamer plugins have already some time proper ASS/SSA subtitle support, but Totem movie player did not somehow keep up with gstreamer development and therefore it may be frustrating or confusing for many users which will not able view ASS subtitles even if they would be told that they are supported.

Try it for yourself... Take any video file, for example some anime and make sure that MKV file contains only video and audio track. Put into the same folder ASS subtitle for this video file, named like the *.mkv video itself and Totem will not able to display those subtitles, even if you give from menu view/load subtitles.

Bud if you re-mux this file in MKV toolnix adding to that file (drag-n-drop) that ASS subtitle file, abraka-dabra, Totem will display that subtitle without a problem.

This should be fixed in Totem movie player asap to be fully Gstreamer compatible and not only under certain ways. It will also make Totem to be again allmost perfect movie player for ubuntu without a need to install VLC or Mplayer...

Hopefully someone will care for this one, because it's already pretty long time ignored :(

Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. Unfortunately a paper cut should be a small usability issue that affects many people and is quick and easy to fix. I'm afraid this bug can't be addressed as part of this project.

.mkv is not the most commonly used format for video files , and further .ass/.ssa are not the most commonly used subtitle formats. these formats are mostly used only for anime mkv files. This is not a bug affecting the majority of average users, Hence not a papercut.

A paper cut is a minor usability annoyance that an average user would encounter on his/her first day of using a new installation of Ubuntu 9.10.

For further info about papercuts criteria , pls read > https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PaperCut

Don't worry though, This bug has been marked as "invalid" ONLY in the papercuts project.the totem part is still active.

Changed in hundredpapercuts:
status: New → Invalid

It is facetious to even begin to suggest that Totem has even partial ASS support.

Absolutely zero text styling is supported.

This is still an issue in 10.04.

Click "Select text subtitles..." and pick any .ass file - the video will reset but still without subtitles.
