thanks for your support.
Due to the fact that my laptop videocard (Radeon XPress 1150) was not longer
supported by ATI in Ubuntu 9.04, I needed to revert back to 8.10.I've made a
fresh install of 8.10 then update again the packages.
(So basically I've made the same steps again in a fresh ubuntu install)
The problem does not occurred any more, so is not longer reproducible on my
PC.

Note that this bug report is unrelated to the ucf bug that has been fixed. I'm not sure what's causing the error shown here.

I'm not really sure if it's related but a crash occured when first window with some kind of comparison in menu.lst displayed and I wanted to go back to check what it was... Then I clicked "cancel" by accident and boom - the crash.

trespasser, that's an unrelated issue. Yes, when you cancel out of a config file resolution dialog, the package configuration will be deferred in the manner shown.

This problem occured for me on an Intel Pentium III, today during automatic update installation. The installation stopped because I had made changes to my /var/run/grub/menu.lst to eliminate the boot time offer to start:

...and the package installer wanted to know if it should keep my changes or use the new version. I tried viewing the differences a couple of different ways, and then asked the manager to start a shell so I could look at the situation more carefully. Then I was interrupted, and when I returned after 10 or 15 minutes, the dialog no longer responded and the installer no longer responded. I started a terminal session, found menu.lst, made a backup copy of it, and then went to the terminal window of the installer and entered "exit". That caused the installer to continue to "completion", but resulting in this set of errors:

...and an incomplete installation. So, something is wrong with the updater. If it stops for input, it doesn't properly wait for that input, and might end up doing something it shouldn't do without the input it stopped for.

It'll be interesting to see if I can get the updates properly installed, or at least uninstalled...

I did not allow the installer to change grub's menu.lst file and this error was the result. Changing menu.lst is pure hell in Ubuntu, and I will not use any form of Linux unless I can make Windows 7 is the default boot option. Editing menu.lst to make that happen is idiot simple, but try and save your changes when Ubuntu is hell bent on denying you root privileges!

 I'm not sure why I received this error, things are working ok for me. I am running Ubuntu 9.04 inside a Microsoft Virtual PC 2007. I did modify my /boot/grub/menu.lst file so that I can modify my resolution on my video card:

Same thing happened with me, as with trespasser. I was trying to compare the grub menu.lst changes (since when I originally upgrade from jaunty to karmic and kept my menu.lst it ended up pointing to the wrong kernel and wrecked all kinds of havoc till I figured out that was the cause). This go round I hit "cancel" by accident. It appeared to finish install and crashed.

Running Ubuntu 9.04, i686 version on an AMD Athlon 2500+, using Upgrade Manager to install linux-image-2.6.28-18-generic (2.6.28-18.59). During the install, I was asked what I wanted to do about the menu.lst. After choosing to accept the maintainer's version, I walked away & when I came back there was an indication that several packages had failed. Here is the relevant section of /var/log/apt/term.log:

First time I've seen this in quite a few kernel updates and several major versions of Ubuntu.

Additionally, it appears the menu.lst was generated correctly, but the rest of the packages weren't installed properly. I've attached the end of /var/log/apt/term.log.

Don't know whether this is a bug or my own fault, I'll try to sort this out again this afternoon. It 's in 10.04 on an extern disk. USB. Completely fresh install. Received a message in my screen telling me to rapport a bug. Do not know if this is one. Couldn follow the instuctions, machine down now.
