No indication that the emulator is still starting up

Bug Description
On first run of the (arm) emulator, it takes a very long time to start up, and while starting up, it shows merely an Ubuntu Edge with a black screen. The Log tab shows that things are going on, but that eventually reaches an end point (when it shows a login prompt!) and you have to continue to wait for the UI to start up. Some sort of indication that the emulator is working rather than broken would be very useful.
