Bug Description

Create a workbook with 1 2 3 in A1 B1 C1 and save it, select the three cells, then create a new workbook and paste special - paste link, a ref to the original workbook is created, save it.
Close both workbooks.
Open the second workbook: all cells look empty. Note that now paste special command is grayed in the edit menu.

Ubuntu 8.10 i386, all patches applied

I assume you are opening two gnumeric files in different instances of gnumeric.
If you open the two files in the same instance (ie. open the second one using
the open menu item in the first gnumeric) paste special should work for you.

The "open" menu item opens an existing workbook; what I have done is creating the two new workbooks from the scratch.

Of course I suppose that the naming is the same as in Excel:
Workbook is a new instance containing one or more worksheet; worksheet is contained inside workbooks.

Paste speciali link works between worksheets of the same workbook, but my bug report is BETWEEN different workbooks.

Thank you everyone!

http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=388522 is BETWEEN different workbooks. Please comment on that report if you have anything to add. The only thing the developer said is to open that second workbook from the original workbook using the menu "File -> Open" . This does allow me to 'Paste Special' to the second workbook. I tested this using my own saved workbooks, saved as Test1 and Test2. If I open Test2 by double-clicking on it, I can not use 'Paste Special'. If I open Test2 from the Test1 menu, I still have different workbooks open, but can now use 'Paste Special'.

I have reported a new bug upstream, because this bug is not about different gnumeric instances so http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=388522 is not applicable.

@HIb Eris: What is it called when two workbooks are opened? Those are two instances of gnumeric open at the same time. Each workbook is a separate instance if opened separately

@Charlie: You can have two workbook instances in one gnumeric instance, but you can also have two gnumeric instances with each having one workbook instance. In the latter case, you have two gnumeric process running. That is what http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=388522 is about.

The original reporter of this bug has only one gnumeric instance, in which he opens two workbook instances to create links, then he saves and closes the instances and re-opens the document from the second instance. Thus he ends up with only one workbook instance in only one gnumeric instance.

The problem he reported is that the links that he created and saved in the second workbook instance disappear when he re-opens the workbook after first closing both workbook instances.
