Bug Description

Binary package hint: nautilus

A url like ftp://<email address hidden> does not work, if the server requires passive ftp.
I found a lot questions at google on how to tell nautilus to use passive ftp, but no one seems to know that.

The tested servers work with other clients.
Nautilus Version 2.18.1

 Tom

Today i attempt to capture the network comm of nautilus with tcpdump.
I'm wondering that it does not even make a dns lookup while trying to
open a ftp://... url. I could see no network communication.
Other protocols like smb://... are working on the same system.
Is ftp in nautilus 2.18.1 completely disabled?

Finally, i found the source of that problem and a workaround:
I have set a proxy server in "Preferences" "Network-Proxy".
This proxy setting is used by nautilus ftp://, but for hosts on
the ignore list, nautilus tries to connect through the proxy too.

For a workaround, i set the proxy for each program separately,
and disabled proxying in "Preferences" "Network-Proxy" completely.

Why is this bug marked 'won't fix'? Passive ftp doesn't work in Nautilus. It's a bug. If you're behind a nat and require a passive connection then it just doesn't work. The proxy workaround is useful but not a permanent solution. This bug needs to be addressed.

And to be honest, 'apt-get install konqueror' is a much easier workaround than fiddling with proxy settings.
