Binary package hint: gnome-utils
I tried to view /var/log/
the problem is caused because of not having the right permissions to see the files, gnome-system-log should use sudo for this.

This bug also occurs in Hardy Heron 8.0.4.1 64 bit kernel 2.6.24-22 but works fine in Jaunty Jackalope 64 bit kernel 2.6.28-2. See also http:// ubuntuforums. org/showthread. php?p=6325690 from post #5 onwards.
