gnome terminal intercepts my alt key combinations when it shouldn't

Bug Description

If I'm logged in to the "Gnome classic" interface then the "Show menubar" option is not respected and my alt key combinations get intercepted.
If I'm logged in to the Ubuntu interface then you can't turn off the menubar and my alt key combinations are always intercepted.

It affects me too on Awesome WM...
When i start gnome-terminal with --hide-menubar, the menu bar still pop ups a few moments after terminal starts. When i press right click it's showing like it's not activated. Then if i activate it, and deactivate it again (using the right click menu on the terminal) it disappears in the end, but I can't start the gnome-terminal without it.

I hope i have helped... I am really looking forward to see this bug fixed as I don't want to switch to using another terminal emulator but I don't like the gnome one like this either...

I am also experiencing this annoying bug since the upgrade to 11.10.

Is there a work around for it until it's fixed?

The gnome bug is already closed as NOTGNOME, because this is an Ubuntu-specific problem.

Still happens for me here (running gnome-shell).

Enabling and then disabling the menu bar again through the in-window context menu makes it go away, but this needs to be repeated for every new window.

Uninstalling appmenu-gtk (having already uninstalled appmenu-gtk3 without improvement) seems to fix the problem.

So, the linked gnome bug has this to say:

"I found a posted workaround that seams to have fixed the problem: sudo apt-get remove appmenu-gtk3 appmenu-gtk appmenu-qt"

followed up with: "Alright, if that makes the bug disappear, it's NOTGNOME. The ubuntu 'global menu' stuff is NOT supported; removing it is the right thing to do!"

So... is this going to be a case of both teams pointing at each other, or is there someone that supports the appmenu/gnome-terminal integration that can track this down and definitively determine who needs to fix it?

On Unity, my Alt key combinations are NOT intercepted when the Edit->Keyboard Shortcuts->Menu Access keys option is unchecked.

This bug is unrelated to the Enable menu access keys option under Keyboard Shortcuts and not limited to Unity. When the menu bar is hidden, the keys are not intercepted. The problem (for me at least) was that gnome-terminal didn't seem to respect the "Show menubar by default in new terminals" option when running gnome-shell. You had to toggle it "on" and then off again to actually hide it.

That said, I can't seem to reproduce this any more using the current beta of 12.04. Manually installing appmenu-gtk and appmenu-gtk3 again still leaves me with a gnome-terminal that properly respects the option. Can anyone else confirm this?
