gnome terminal screws up display when using different size fonts in tabs.

konsole does not.

I would expect gnome-terminal to have the same behaviour as konsole.

Konsole is shown first and last. Gnome Terminal is shown in the middle of the video. 'top' shows nicely in konsole, but screws up after a few tab switches in gnone-terminal.
