I mentioned to Robert last week that I keep getting the spinner and no results returned when searching in g-s on 16.04. He suggested I update to the version in the PPA and enable logging to capture what's happening. Log attached.

There's one thing I noticed in there, I think the pin-town icon is larger than the snap plugin can handle - can you confirm if this occurs after uninstalling pin-town? I don't think this is related but worth checking (and I'll fix that anyway).

I am seeing this on a fresh install of Artful. In addition to the search running forever (or at least a long time) there are no apps to be seen in the various categories (just rectangles with ... inside) and the featured app and editor's picks just show dots.

Should I report this as a new bug or is it the same one?

Colin - probably best to file a new bug and we can close as a duplicate if the same cause.

Robert - yes I think you are right. In fact the issue went away after I rebooted (at least I think that was what did it). I need to re-install the OS and see if it happens again.

Laney says it's the same issue than https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=784251 which is fixed upstream now

This is still a problem on Ubuntu 18.10:

- search spins forever
- clicking on a category shows a bunch of empty boxes with an ellipsis in it
- fetching updates also seems to spin forever

journalctl _EXE=/usr/bin/gnome-software shows nothing today; the last log entries were from Nov 9:

lapkr. 09 10:49:17 platonas gnome-software[6336]: failed to get updates: Timeout was reached as flatpak took too long to return results
lapkr. 09 10:49:26 platonas gnome-software[6336]: failed to get updates: Timeout was reached as flatpak took too long to return results

Killing and restarting gnome-software fixes everything.

this is happened for me on 21.10 and I just upgraded to the development release of 22.04 and it was still happening.

version 41.2-1

the spinner would just sit there spinning on a search.

strace of gnome-software showed it doing nothing really.

I sent a TERM signal to the gnome-software process and restarted it, and search is working fine now

nothing seems very relevant in the systemd journal:
