Ubuntu dock behaves crazy when hidden at the bottom of the screen

I confirm that this bug is present (and I know one person who does have the same bug), to reproduce you have to set it to bottom and to auto-hide, then hover over with the mouse, 70% of the time it works properly, and other 30% it keeps popping up, appearing and disappearing like mentioned above. What can be done on my end to help troubleshoot and fix?

It happens to me too.

Jesus Christ. Somehow the "Ubuntu Dock" keeps interacting EVEN OFF and conflicting with other dock extensions and even extensions like "Hide Top Bar"! I had to uninstall the standard dock from the terminal to resolve the following issues:

-Double dock;
-Dock flashing / bouncing in fullscreen.

The problem was completely resolved with the following command:

-sudo apt remove gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock

I'm pretty sure that the standard Ubuntu Dock smarthide/intelhide continues to interfere with the intelhide of other extensions even after it is disabled... It needs to be uninstalled. Something needs to be done about this extension.

I'm a capable software developer. However, I am at a loss on where to start debugging this issue. Does anyone have any idea of where to start?

You would have to dock the tab in the bottom and set auto-hide. Then try to
use it while using folders/windows, in some cases it buggs out, pretty
frequently to notice.

It could be the auto-hide feature something to do with some pixel counting.

For myself, I'm only seeing this issue when IntelliJ is open and over the dock location, versions 2020.3 and 2021.1 thus far. I can't reproduce with any other application.

Just realized that it happens to me too when using Android Studio, which is kinda a fork of IntelliJ Idea, so maybe it's something related to IntelliJ interface or Java or something alike...

I wonder if the rest of the users here have experienced it with the same products.

I can recreate this issue with many other applications, not limited to intellij. From my experience, this has much more to do with timing.
Order of operations for recreation that I tested with only firefox open:
1. Make any program doc/stick to the bottom of the screen (easiest way to do this is to make the program full screen).
2. Move your mouse cursor to the bottom of the screen to unhide the bottom dock. (This will force it to draw over the full screen aplication you have open).
3. Very quickly move your cursor away from the bottom of the screen forcing the dock to start to hide again.
4. Before the doc hides again, this happens very quickly, move the mouse back down to the bottom of the screen to unhide the dock again.

Very often, but not always, this procedure will recreate the bug and cause the dock menu to fidgit between trying to hide its self and un-hide its self.

I switched to Wayland today because of a different issue concerning X-11 crashing while using display ports and as a side effect do not see this issue at all now. I suspect that one of the following to be true:
1. the issue was fixed in another bug
2. Using Wayland instead of X11 is a work around to this issue. As the issue relates to the interaction between Gnome and X11.
Can someone confirm to me that this issue still exists and whether or not switching to Wayland instead of X11 works around the issue? Just because it worked for me, doesn't mean that it's a fix for everyone.

I've been seeing this bug for at least a year (occurring with any number of applications that I run -- it does not seem specific to any particular thing). I came across this bug report today after wondering about possible workarounds. I can confirm that switching to Wayland as @rustyscottweber suggests seems to fix this problem on my machine. I am running Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS.

I see this issue fairly frequently with the dock at the RHS of the display, I do not think it is related to the location.

Having just moved all the other windows on this display away from the dock location it has opened & remained open without the mouse cursor over it.

Setting a window to fullscreen again caused the dock to hide & un-maximising the window did not re-open the dock (ie, it remains hidden).

At this point it can be unhidden normally (without flickering) by moving the mouse to the screen edge, and dock autohides once the mouse is off it again.

I conclude there is a problem with the mouseover/show/hide state logic, since in the example I just gave, the dock opened without the mouseover as soon as there was screen area for it to avoid overlaying another window.

Looks like it thought it had a mouseover it was trying to comply with.
I wonder if the mouseover logic is
    dock_should_be_open = NOT dock_should_be_open

and somehow it ends up inconsistent with the actual open state of the dock, so tries to simultaneously open & close when the mouse gets to the edge of the display (and why it popped open without a mouse for me).
