Mute/unmute keyboard button does not work properly

Bug Description

When I press the mute/unmute button on my keyboard it mutes the sound, but when I press it again it doesn't unmute it. Solution is to use the mouse to go to the volume control tray and press 'unmute'.
This is in Xubuntu 10.10 .

I have the same problem in Xbuntu 11.10. Pressing the mute button on the keyboard mutes both the alsa and pulse-audio mixers, but pressing the button a second time only unmutes the alsa mixer.

Output of uname -a:

Any ideas on how to solve this?
I can confirm the issue as well, running Xubuntu 11.10.
