Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

The daemon crashed when I opened a link to a HQ youtube movie.

.xsession-errors:

** (gnome-settings-daemon:17848): WARNING **: Failed to acquire org.gnome.SettingsDaemon

** (gnome-settings-daemon:17848): WARNING **: Could not acquire name
The program 'gnome-settings-daemon' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadDrawable (invalid Pixmap or Window parameter)'.
  (Details: serial 17004 error_code 9 request_code 14 minor_code 0)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

If more logs are needed, i'll add them.

You will need to do pass "--sync --no-daemon" to gnome-settings-daemon in order to get a backtrace for this.

Hello,

Don't really know how to reproduce this though. It doesn't always happen.
gnome-settings-daemon is started when my session starts, correct?

The link Sebastien provided tells me to start the program in gdb. Where do i change how it is run?

It depends on whether the crash only ever happens when you start your session, or if it happens when your session has been running for a while. If it is the latter, then all you need to do is "killall gnome-settings-daemon", then run a new instance with GDB (remembering "--sync --no-daemon", else it will just exit when it forks).

If it only ever happens at the start of your session, you'll have to edit /etc/xdg/autostart/gnome-settings-daemon.desktop to start it with "--sync" by appending it to the end of the Exec line. Assuming you've got Apport enabled, it will then leave a crash report which you can submit to Launchpad in the usual way.

Based on the types of crashes we're seeing submitted at the moment, you will need the following extra packages installed: gnome-settings-daemon-dbgsym libglib2.0-0-dbg libgtk2.0-0-dbg libc6-dbg libxklavier15-dbgsym libxrandr2-dbg libgnome-desktop-2-11-dbgsym libx11-6-dbg

Please install these even if using Apport, as it means that any trace you submit will likely have a lot of the symbols in already, and will minimize the amount of work that the retracer has to do and makes it more likely that your crash report will be useful

Thanks!

Incidentally, request code 14 is GetGeometry at the protocol level, which is either XGetGeometry or XGetWindowAttributes in xlib, which means this might be a duplicate of bug 404924

Ok, in that bug report the request files are already given so i'll just see what happens there.

That doesn't mean it's definately the same issue, only that it might be

This issue is reproducible with Intel DX58SO motherboard. It occurs when when open sites which contains Rich AJAX or flash player. eg Yahoo Chess. This problem is prominent on Ubuntu Versions greater than 10.04. I reported this bug Bug 986773 with apport but they also regarded it as "Incomplete". You can also check 971353. I only mentioned one reproducible path but I am sure there are many and with my experience I have faced it multiple times. Also in my case, it is worst , the whole system restarts with the crash.

If this bug is not fixed, then I cannot upgrade from 10.04 or else I will switch to another Linux OS.
