Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-session

Ubuntu Intrepid alpha 5, all updates installed

1. Open a maximized window, such as Firefox.
2. Choose "System" > "Log Out…" or "System" > "Shut Down…".
3. Choose "System" > "Log Out…" or "System" > "Shut Down…" again.

What happens:
2. The dialog appears sometimes frontmost, sometimes in the background, depending on how recently you focused another window.
3. The dialog disappears behind the maximized window.

What should happen:
2. The dialog should always appear frontmost.
3. The dialog should always appear frontmost.

I'm not sure whether this is a bug in gnome-session or compiz.

This bug and bug 154547 are mutually exclusive, depending on the resolution of bug 251211.

Intrepid beta...

can confirm the problem... the shut down menu appears under the other opened windows

I think this should really be taken care of. Hidden window, especially when it comes to something as important as shut down is just bad usability. It will give an bad impression.

I also prefered the older shutdown menu / method... well that's a bit out topic... either way this bug should be fixed...

In my case the shut down menu appears under other windows the first time around.

Note that the effect of this bug is that the system may shut down unexpectedly. I.e., I may click on the shutdown icon planning to suspend, see that nothing happens (since the window would be hidden), continue to work, only to have the system shutdown one minute later. I am surprised this is marked as low priority.

I can confirm this with Ubuntu 8.10 (final).
Gnome 2.24.1
2.6.27-9-generic #1 SMP, x86_64 GNU/Linux
Compiz is enabled.

Looks like there is similar behavior in bug 165161 and bug 89824.

I can confirm with Jaunty.

The Shut Down menu is actually on top of Firefox, but invisible. If you click in the right spot it'll actually shut your computer down. For example:

1) Maximize a firefox window, make sure it has focus
2) Open System > Shut Down
3) Note that "Shut Down" appears in the task bar, but not on the screen
4) Click somewhere in the middle of your screen, note that the "Shut Down" menu becomes visible, and depending on where you clicked could possible log you out, shut down the machine, suspend, etc.

Ubuntu 2.6.28-11.40-generic
Compiz enabled

dmandell is totally right. I had never noticed this before, but in fact, the shut down menu actually is on top and is clickable, even though it is invisible. This only makes the problem more severe, though.

On the other hand, a few clarifications:

1. This is not specific to Firefox. The same happens if the window in front is OpenOffice, Epiphany,gnome-terminal, etc.
2. The window does not need to be maximized. If the top window isn't maximized, then only the part covered by it is invisible.
3. Whether the Shut Down menu becomes insivible seems to depend a little on what manipulations had been done with the windows before. For me, a way to make this happen consistently is to toggle through the windows with Alt-Tab before clicking on the shutdown button in the panel.

It is definitely a compiz bug, and one that I have seen before with other apps.
