Hi,

Unfortunately no. What has happened is that the the Function and
Brightness level change buttons have no effect whatsoever and as a
result the level indicator does not illuminate or flash

Can you please open a terminal and type
apport-collect -p gnome-power-manager 387269

that will autocollect infos about gnome-power manager·

Then attach here these files:

/var/log/syslog
/var/log/dmesg
/var/log/kern.log

Hi Fabio,

I did what you instructed including Launchpad and everything went fine
until I tried to attach the files. As this point each time I tried each
file came up with 'access denied'.

Best regards,

Jim

Hi Fabio,

Sorry, but you have lost me; are you talking about in the terminal
window? If you are, well there's no attachment facility I see in the
terminal window.

Regards,

Jim

Sorry i don't explain well.
Here in Launchpad below there's a green circle (with + inside) with the message 'Add attachment or patch', just click on it and will open the browser and you have to select var log syslog click open and click post Comment.
Same operations for /var/log/dmesg and /var/log/kern.log

I can confirm this. When I leave the netbook idle, the brightness control starts spazzing out, flickering back and forth between two brightness levels, and eating 100% of one CPU core (at least if notify-osd is running). On the login screen (no notify-osd), it happens fast enough that it may be a safety hazard for epileptics.

It looks like some "for each" function looks at each backlight object present -- and on Samsung, there are two /sys/class/backlight entries: "acpi_video0" and "samsung". There's also the xbacklight support in the Intel driver, so there's really no reason for it to be going to sysfs, if that is indeed what it is doing.

Thanks for reporting this bug and any supporting documentation. Since this bug has enough information provided for a developer to begin work, I'm going to mark it as confirmed and let them handle it from here. Thanks for taking the time to make Ubuntu better!

Changed in gnome-power-manager (Ubuntu):

I'm also affected by that bug. My chipset and graphics card are a little different, Intel GM965 and GMA X3100 instead of the 945GME and GMA 950(probably) on the computer(according to lspci log attachment) of the user who filed this report. I use Ubuntu 10.10. When gnome-power-manager is running, if AC power is unplugged, lid is closed, brightness is changed(doesn't have to be on battery, it also happens on AC power) or even if the computer is sitting there, idle, the backlight starts going up and down, CPU usage increases to 100%, the keyboard stops to respond properly and the drop down menus don't work, so it's the same bug. The only way to get out of it is by killing gnome-power-manager. I don't know which extra information should be posted, but I can post it if required.

Hello Victor
just to point out the situation with Maverick,
can you please start a new session and run this commands in the terminal:

killall gnome-power-manager && gnome-power-manager --verbose 2>&1 | tee ~/gpm.log

reproduce the bug, kill gpm, and attach here the gpm.log file that you can found in your home dir.
Also attach here
/var/log/syslog
/var/log/kern.log
/var/log/Xorg.0.log
Thanks
