Bug Description
After a recent update (the last day or two) brightness control is now more broken on my Dell XPS M1330. The brightness controls jump over multiple brightness levels. After "dimming" the display because of inactivity, the system restores it to a dimmer level than the "dimmed" state.

I tried blacklisting the video 'module'. This did fix the problem of
controlling the brightness, but broke the brightness control in a
different way. Without the 'video' module, if I change the brightness
(using keyboard hotkeys) then the brightness-
lingers on the screen and focus is never released (I can no longer use
the keyboard for anything except controlling the brightness.)

Thanks for the report Jason Kraftcheck , It has been a long time without any comment or a duplicate in this bug report and It is possible that the bug has been fixed. May you please try to reproduce it with the latest Stable Release of Ubuntu the Natty Narwhal and add the respective comments to the report? You can learn how to get that release at http://

There's a workaround by dell's support in this webpage http:// blog.higherthin gs.org/ borghardt/ article/ 3633.html
You should blacklist the video module. It worked for me.
