Hibernate fails on Dell Inspiron 8600 with Intrepid

I've just installed Ubuntu 8.10 on an IBM ThinkPad A31p and I get the black screen and identical error

[*****.********] pm_op(): pci_pm_thaw + 0x0/0x50 returns -16
[*****.********] PM: Device 0000:00:00.0 failed to thaw: error -16

when hibernating. Returning from hibernation, however, is successful.
I'm new to this so please let me know if any extra information or log file contents would be useful.

Similar problem with suspend on the Dell Inspiron 8600. Entering suspend mode seems to go without a hitch, but returning gives an identical error:

Followed by a blank screen and then color bleeding.

I'm attaching another log of the suspend case. If there is any more information needed, let me know.

Similar story. I'm on a Thinkpad R50. Resume is always successful, but sometimes hibernate fills the screen with error messages about allocating swap. I can't find a log entry for that, perhaps someone can point me to the right place?

Just to add to the confusion... I have a Dell Inspiron 9400 which (appears to) Hibernate perfectly well but never Restores - just goes through the normal boot cycle as if I had performed a Shutdown, no errors that I can detect, either during the Hibernate or the Restore phases.

It has done this since 8.04. Suspend works just fine.

Dell Inspiron 525 Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex,

Hibernate just locks the system. Nothing else.
I installed a dual boot (rather than via Wubi) only for enabling Hibernation; but it fails :|

Same error on Jaunty alpha 3 and jaunty with updates as of 20080130.

Tested with Thinkpad T42p.

Similar problem on my Dell xps1530 Kubuntu Intrepid Ibex. Everything appears ok when I suspend to RAM or to Disk but it never restores as explains MikeN

When i try to hibernate with my Dell Inspiron 8600 nvidia FX 5650 go graphics card the machine turns down quite smoothly from what i can tell

but when i try to wake him back up i get a black screen with bleeding white circels moving over the screen like a slow wave .

Same story with suspend.

i get the pretty colours and have unchanged error behaviour in 9.04 as i had in 8.10.

Get both pci_pm_thaw error messages at suspend.
On subsequent bootup, the system resumes from suspend seemingly without errors.
Something is still amiss.

Got a DELL Dimension 4100 and got the sames problems as yours (PCI_PM_THAW -16) when hibernate and when resuming, got artifacts everywhere, no computer is unusable (Hard Reset).

Is that Odd or there seems to be DELL computer who got thoses problems ? Is there a problem on their BIOS how they handle APCI call or what ? Anyway, it"s works just fine on Windows XP or Vista, so it's just something with DELL than Windows is aware about...

BTW, i do use a ATI AIW 9800 PRO video card. At first, I was looking for a problem with video card. Now, it looks to be a APCI/BIOS problem...

What do you think ?

I checked both of suspend and hibernate on my system to see if any of the latest updates perhaps fixed this bug. They have not. I still cannot use neither suspend nor hibernate on my system without the system failing on resume and covering my screen with colors.

I have a nVidia Corporation GeForce 8600M GT. I then decided to use the Nvidia proprietary drivers instead of the free ones. Now, I can hibernate (no suspending) and the computer awake 90% of the time. This is not perfect but this is better than before.

I hope it'll help to fix this bug.

Hi guys, sorry you keep being asked this, but this should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Lucid Lynx. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/.
If this is still a problem in Lucid, please execute the following command, as it will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:

apport-collect -p linux 298804

You may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe repository. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability to "Change Non-Private" data as it will be adding information to your bug report. I've had hibernate issues since 8.10 too on my Inspiron 9400. Karmic will suspend once and/or hibernate once per boot, then hangs on the next attempt.

I would love to test this on Lucid but it won't even boot... the screen gets all garbled at the very start and it just hangs. If I can help I will but currently can't at all with Lucid - any info. I can provide on hardware I'm happy to, but it will have to gathered via 8.10 which is the most reliable on this box.

Furthermore, both hibernate and suspend used work on our Mini 9 until some months ago but that stopped too, both operations result in a blank screen and no activity, I have to force the power off - they also do not work in Lucid but at least the thing boots! Do you wish me to run this in the mini's?

This bug report is specifically for the Dell Inspiron 8600. If you have this problem on another machine model, I would suggest you file a new bug report. This goes for all the above with different machines, which as fair as I can see is practically every commenter on this bug report apart from the reporter. Hibernation/resume/suspend issues are highly likely to be hardware dependent, and so each machine may have a slightly different point of failure. If the issue is deemed to be related, then it will be marked as a duplicate by another triager.

@Marek: Please test with a Live CD of Lucid as explained above, and provide the required information by running the "apport-collect 298804" command as above.
