Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

By default, whenever GNOME starts, gnome-power-manager sets the CPUFREQ to ondemand.
This is particularly annoying to those who prefer the performance governor.
And it happens even if you disable the powernowd service.

But there is already a very elegant solution to this:
The gnome-power-manager UI *already* allows you to choose the CPUFREQ governor for AC and BATTERY independently.
Ubuntu could still ship with ondemand as default, but this would allow desktop users to enable the performance governor easily.

The problem is: this option is NOT displayed in the UI by default.
To enable it you must set a gconf key: /apps/gnome-power-manager/ui/cpufreq_show

I am reporting this bug since I spent more than a day trying to enable the performance governor as default,
while this very simple and elegant method already existed, but for some reason is hidden.
Please, enable the possibility to choose the governor in the UI.

Just a hint for anyone coming from #156472: The options I was really looking for are:

/apps/gnome-power-manager/cpufreq/policy_battery
/apps/gnome-power-manager/cpufreq/policy_ac

Ciao

Exactly.
These are really the important options.
They allow you to change the cpufreq governor easily for AC and for BATTERY.

The point of this BUG is: You don't have to edit them by hand using gconf-editor.
These options are already available at the Power Management UI, but they are hidden.
But by just setting /apps/gnome-power-manager/ui/cpufreq_show, they will beautifully
appear there without cluttering the interface at all.

This BUG report is a request to enable these options by default.

Oops, I forgot to mention that the UI did not offer the "conservative" governor. When I am low on battery I normally use this ohne instead of locking the box down to the lowest speed with "powersave". With it. little activity does not directly push it to maximum (and increasing VCore), but just a little bit.

I think it is a good idea to enable cpufreq_show in gnome-power-manager/ui in gconf by default.

Why not add conservative option too??

The bug is still present in Hardy and Intrepid.
I have read in bug #292148 that upstream have removed all of the cpufreq code in gnome-power-manager for Intrepid. I don't know if this is correct as an explanation about this wasn't given in that bug report.
Anyway I think that Ubuntu should allow a user to choose cpu freq by default and not forcing him to spend (as I also did) much time to find a solution via web to this simple issue.

In Lucid, I don't even see the gconf keys anymore? Is it not possible to set the scaling governor anymore in gnome-power-manager?
