clock applet does not remember home location between sessions

Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

The clock applet does nor remember the home location between sessions I have to manually set it every time I log in.
The most obvious way this show up is that I don't get any wheather status in the panel, but also when opening the applet no city is chosen as home ctiy.

I have 4 cities (Ängelholm, Stockholm, Umeå and Niagra Falls) defined.

I don't have any /etc/timezone.

The machine was installed last summer on 'Ubuntu 7.10 _Gutsy Gibbon_ - Alpha amd64 (20070823.5)' and has been upgraded since then

I can reproduce this. I created a test user and did nothing with the account but log in, click on the clock applet, create a location (NYC LaGuardia Airport) and click on "set location" next to the location listing in the clock applet's menu. I was prompted for my password to set the system time, I entered the password and the weather report showed up correctly next to the clock. I logged out and logged back in, and the weather report was gone, the home location setting had been lost somehow. Using the latest hardy.

I am seeing the same issue with 8.10. I also had this problem with 8.04. I checked the XML files in .gconf, and it shows one of the locations set as current.

gconf configuration of your clock here? It's in
/apps/panel/applets/{something}/prefs

Yeah, and the upstream bug is moribund unfortunately (much like this one). The reporter was asked for information, provided it and then nothing more was done with it.

I solved a bit of this. The system time zone must be set to the preferred weather time zone via system tools. For some reason, the system time zone wasn't set to the right place. Now the weather report persists from session to session.
