Bottom task bar moves up an inch when I connect to external video/projector

Bug Description

I have a Dell Latitude D630 and at the moment whenever I connect to a projector in a meeting room the bottom task bar moves up by about an inch on my laptop's screen, but not on the projection and remains there even after I have detached my laptop from the projector. If I re-boot the problem is fixed, but it is quite annoying when I have to do this after every time I connect my machine to a projector.

The behaviour is known, the moving up of the panels is so they show on the projector screen. The computer won't detect the projector screen has been removed until you press the "video" buttoin on the laptop, or perhaps close / reopen the lid.

I've noticed this problem a lot myself; I suspect it may be an issue with how gnome-panel reacts to xrandr resize events. Adding gnome-panel.

D630 seems to have intel graphics. Hardly a bug in xrandr-the-program.

I have a Dell Latitude D620 and the same problem.

After booting, the Gnome Panel is displayed at the right position (at the bottom of the screen). It doesn't matter which screen options were chosen, i.e., whether an external screen is connected or not - after booting, everything usually works.

Then, after pressing the "video button" (CRT/LCD), the system automatically detects connected external screens and uses all available screens (notebook + monitor/projector). At the bottom of the screen, the Gnome Panel is displayed above an empty bar, which has the same size.

The bar won't disappear. Disconnecting the external screen and pressing the video button again don't take effect.

2. Download and test the Jaunty alpha-2 (or newer) Live CD,
(which includes a beta of the new xserver 1.6 as well).

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.
