Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-device-manager

Bug:
gnome-device-manager package does not work in Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala

What was supposed to happen:
The gnome-device-manager package should have run.

What happened instead:
Upon trying to run the 'gnome-device-manager' from the terminal, it does not run at all and returns this error:

(gnome-device-manager:22850): GnomeDeviceManager-WARNING **: Failed to initialize libhal context: (null) : (null)

(gnome-device-manager:22850): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_widget_show_all: assertion `GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the package via the Terminal, but the result is still the same. It also does not install a link to the gnome-device-manager in the Applications -> System Tools menu either.

GNOME-Device-Manager working in 9.10 with kernel 2.6.31-17-generic !!!

It is definitely working with me in the following environment :

2.6.31-17-generic #54-Ubuntu SMP Thu Dec 10 16:20:31 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux

... and I'm glad about that 'cause I need it trying to answer the question why my sound hardware quit working right after activating the "Freevo Media Centre" (activated with Software-Center in menu "Applications".

Best wishes
Rainer

GNOME-Device-Manager definitly works with this Karmic 9.10 kernel :

2.6.31-17-generic #54-Ubuntu SMP Thu Dec 10 16:20:31 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux

I'm using it finding out why my sound hardware surprisingly failed right after activating the "Freevo Media Centre" home theater stuff ...

Please keep me posted with any hardware issues alike ...

Thanx and Best Wishes
Rainer

I'm encountering this bug with Lucid. I have two different x86 systems - an Asus EeePC 1000 and a Dell Inspiron 2650. It fails on the EeePC with the same libhal message. On the Inspiron it works without problems.
