I have absolutely the same problem updating from 12.10 to 13.04 yesterday. After the update when I try to access the System Settings -> Sound the windows crashes and dmesg gives:

kernel: [ 101.174326] gnome-control-c[2351]: segfault at 7fff94739f28 ip 00007f79123788ca sp 00007fff94739f30 error 6 in libc-2.17.so[7f791232f000+1be000]

Although, it won't open the System Settings -> Sound playback in every applications is normal and pavucontrol also works. Anyway I can't change the default device now. With 12.10 there were no problems.

My devices are:

I've also tried
sudo apt-get install --reinstall gnome-control-center*

then rebooted but nothing changed.

Ubuntu 13.04 is very unstable here, i don't have a clue how to solve this...

Addition:

Running gnome-control-center in the terminal and selecting audio settings gives a crash with following error:

"(gnome-control-center:4796): sound-cc-panel-WARNING **: active_input_update - couldn't find a stream from the supposed active input

(gnome-control-center:4796): sound-cc-panel-WARNING **: active_output_update - couldn't find a stream from the supposed active output

Segmentation fault"

# uname -r
3.8.13-custom

Pavucontrol via terminal is working fine btw.

I have the same problem here. Ubuntu 13.04 x86.

When attaching a Alesis os|2 Soundcard (lsusb id 13b2:0008) and open the volume control it crashes when I try to change the soundcard (i.e. using its input).

The window gets closed, and dmesg has a error message as follows:

gome-control-c[15264]: segfault at bf651f64 ip b6b95989 sp bf651f60 error 6 in libc-2.17.so
