Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

System Monitor applet provides invalid information when moving a mouse pointer to its charts on GNOME Panel.

Steps to reproduce:
1) add System Monitor applet to one of GNOME panels and set network chart to be shown
2) start to download sth from internet, taking care of nearly constant rate (like about 100 KB/s all the time)
3) move mouse over the network chart

Result: download information drastically decrease although transfer rate doesn't change

Expected result: download information is not affected by moving a mouse pointer

I attached a screenshot showing this issue - all drops in the middle chart come from moving mouse over this chart, not from actual download rate drop.

I came to post the same bug. It seems that while producing the little info bubble popup that displays the network speed, the applet is incapable of also tracking the actual network traffic! I noticed it first on an AMD64 system, but now I am using 32bit and the behavior is the same.

Monitoring disk usage by system monitor applet shares the same problem.

If it's been reported then I guess You should mark it as a duplicate instead of making it invalid... How can I find the original report?

We don't always have the time available to search for the original report when we see a bug that we know has already been reported. You're more than welcome to search for the already existing report though and add the link yourself
