Bug Description

Binary package hint: geany

When I try to open a file that seems to have characters in a different encoding, geany silently refuses to open the file, only the status area has a comment about it. Also if I force the encoding, it just cuts off at the first non-matching character, without telling me what happened.

As a user, I would love to be informed about such a thing, currently I just wonder why the document is not opened, only when I check the status-area I see that it failed to open for some reason.

I see various options to improve this:
- provide a dialog to tell the user about a file that is not (completely) opened
- provide a way to display the invalid characters differently and still load the document in full, not concatenating it mid-document

Changed in geany (Ubuntu):
status: New → Triaged

Dominik, can you attach the file in question either here or on the upstream tracker at http://sourceforge.net/support/tracker.php?aid=3232135 ?

It only takes a single null character to throw geany. Attached a simple test file.
