Thank you for your bug report. The issue is an upstream one and it would be nice if somebody having it could send the bug the to the people writting the software (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME)

Additionally to this issue, according to adduser man said that: "You can't use special characters, must use only letters, numbers, points,etc, just like said standard IEEE 1003.1-2001. You only can add a "$" to end of username for samba accounts"

@Karmus: This applies to the "short" user name. GDM shows the "long" user name.
