If this requires packaging, can you please package Version 1.0.1, see here:

This bugs status should not be. "Wishlist".

Freemind has been in Ubuntu for years, but the package is currently missing in 16.04.

It was removed from Debian and so was also removed from Ubuntu. The Debian bug is here: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=807682

You can use Freeplane as an alternative.

Use Freeplane instead of Freemind (I had to switch from Freemind to Freeplane in Ubuntu 16.04, and I like Freeplane better; it is more up-to-date and it reads all the mind-maps I initially created in Freemind):

sudo apt-get install freeplane

If you try freeplane, you might have to change the default theme for it to work correctly:

Add some heat to the bug above if it is still an issue.

Found a way:

step 1:
Paste this code in your software sources:
deb http://archive.getdeb.net/ubuntu wily-getdeb apps
install updates

step 2:
Open terminal and install:
sudo apt-get install freeplane
or in synaptic

Step 3:
Install:
libbcel-java (6.0~rc3-2ubuntu1)
libjibx-java (1.2.6-1)
libjibx1.2-java (1.2.6-1)

Step 4:
Download:
libjibx1.1-java_1.1.6a-3ubuntu1_all.deb
I used: http://packages.ubuntu.com/precise/all/libjibx1.1-java/download
Install using gdebi

Step 5:
Install Freemind

Step 6:
Enjoy

Try Freeplane instead. It is a more active fork of Freemind.
