firefox 3.0b5 goes uninterruptible for a few seconds during normal browsing

Same happens to me. Didn't install anything but Adobe Flash via Ubuntu package and the Web Developer toolbar.

When browsing, Firefox sometimes greys out doesn't react. After ~5-10 seconds, it becomse responsive again. This doesn't happen only on special Websites (large Flash, Java or so) but on "normal" ones.

I am experiencing the same problem. I am using Ubuntu Hardy (dev) but this problem only started to occur after upgrading to firefox 3 b5. I experience this problem many times during normal browsing. The cpu usage of FF is close to zero, if not zero. Memory usage seems normal too.

I can confirm this happens on a regular 32 bit system as well, HP dv6000 with a fully updated hardy and FF 3b5. Only started happening in the last 2/3 days (April 20th ish) and I've been on Hardy Beta for weeks, keeping up with all updates.

I just hat this problem and it was very extreme - almost every click in Firefox took about 10 seconds. Then I cleared the cache and the problem went away (for the moment). Maybe this helps...

Additionally, Firefox 3b5 was working fine before the 20th, and works fine on my Windows Box at work, so I'm reluctant to blame the bug on Firefox.

I have the same problem. On my box the unresponsiveness is also connected to excessive hard drive access. It seems that when it happens, files urlclassifier3.sqlite and urlclassifier3.sqlite-journal are being accessed. I did some digging around the net and found this: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=402469. That might be related?

Some people also made the problem disappear after disabling "Tell me if the site I'm visiting..." from Preferences -> Security or by reducing the number of days from Privacy -> History. I cleared the profile altogether and haven't had the issue since. None of those are a real fix though.

I am having the same problems with firefox 3 beta 5 on a fully updates hardy heron system, which is quite clean because I installed it from the CD two days ago. I have now disabled all the add-ons to see if one of them causes the problem. It does not seem to happen right now, while entering this report (i.e. with everything turned off).

A short description; Every now en then when browsing firefox seems to stop responding. The status of firefox in system monitor is 'uninterruptible' and the screen greys out. The mouse cursor does not change when I hover over text, an image or a link. After 5 to 10 seconds the screen turns into colors again and I can browse further. This has happend a number of times while entering something in a textbox (enter search terms etc).

I have many addons (plugins) installed, but I think most of them came with hardy heron or at least with the package manager; Adobe reader 8.0, default plugin, demo print plugin for unix/linux. divx web player 1.4.0.233, helix DNA plugin 2.22.1, iTunes application detector, Quicktime plugin 7.2.0 2.22.1, shockwave flash 9.0 r124, totem web browser plugin 2.22.1, VLC web browser plugin 2.22.1, VLC 2.22.1, Windows Media player plug-in 10 2.22.1
I will update here if such an add-on seems to cause this behavior.

The plugins are not the problem, it also happens when all plugins are disabled. I think javascript is the problem. The problem occurs a lot when browsing on a social networking site like www.hyves.nl. So I shut down the javascript and I could browse for a long time without any problems of this kind. Hope this helps...

I have this issue and it was not present during the last hardy beta.

I think I fixed it by clearing the profile and copying back some files for the bookmarks etc. The profiles were ancient, used since FF 1.5, and were located in a folder that was also accessed by Windows on this dual boot system, which still runs FF2.0.x.

I have a feeling this is a dup of another bug but it just happens less of the time as other bug. Will look into this today or tomorrow.

eh a little sooner than not let me know if you see something that makes you think this is wrong bbut from what everyone has said and knowing the bug fairly well this is what i think it is 98% sure.

Is this problem fixed?

Just because the current version of Firefox is buggy doesn't mean you have to stop using Ubuntu. You could always use Firefox 2 instead, which doesn't have this problem, or you could use Opera or Epiphany.

As I explain to GZ on a separate email, a workaround that worked for me was
disabling the phishing protection,

edit>preference>security> then, turn off both "Tell me if the site...."
options. At least until this get fixed.

     I've not noticed any more delay recently.

You can check if IO is the problem by keeping open a terminal with the
following command running:

# pidstat -d 10

Every 10 seconds, prints a stat of the most IO intensive processes.
Take a look at the output when FF hangs, and post the results.

pidstat is part of sysstat package.

Very odd, this problem was bugging for a while but right after I posted this issue, it went away and I can't seem to reproduce it anymore.
Have been trying it out a few days and everything seems ok...

Not sure why but I will definitely try out the suggestion if it ever occurs again and keep you posted

It is happening to me in Firefox 3.08 in Jaunty. I'll try disabling the phishing warning and see if that helps. I note in the System Monitor, the process is uninterruptable and it says journal_stopped off to the right of that.
