Hi Dave
Do you mean the "Check for updates..." option in Firefox's help menu? If so, this is by design. Firefox in Ubuntu is upgraded through the package management system (apt), so the update notifier should automatically let you know when there's a new version ready. Firefox is running in your normal user account, without permission to modify installed programs, so its built in upgrade mechanism is disabled.
From the information in your bug report, you've already got the latest version, 3.0.9.
