Changing resolution in Displays settings completly messes up desktop

Bug Description

I have a monitor and a projector connected to my system. I'm testing 12.04 64-bit with all current updates and I'm using AMD catalyst drivers. Monitor is 1900x1200, and max resolution for projector is 1400x1050. if I try to change the resolution from Displays settings to 1400x1050, to be able to use Mirror mode, complete desktop gets messed up (see screenshot), and only logout/login could help. Windows loose theri borders and titlebars and their content isn't rendered as it should anymore.

Thank you for your bug report. Does it happen every time you do those steps? Could you add your .xsession-errors, syslog and Xorg.0.log after getting the issue?

Yes, it happens every time when I change the resolution, or if I turn on mirror mode (which also changes resolution). This makes projector almost unusable. The files that you requested are in attachment. If there is anything I could test or try, please say. I really want to use 12.04, but this is a show-stopper for me. I'll try the same with open-source drivers, but I think that 7950 isn't supported yet...

Open source drivers don't even recognise that I have two outputs connected to graphic card, and my resolution is stuck at 1400x1050. Also, Unity2D is activated, because there is no 3D support. So, these drivers are not an option (although changing resolution to lower than 1400x1050 doesn't mess up screen).

Thanks for the update, do you get the issue with the fglrx driver under i.e gnome-shell or unity-2d as well? not sure if that's a driver,xorg issue or an unity one...

I never actually used Gnome shell, as it was very buggy with AMD graphic cards. I installed Gnome Shell, just to test this, and it changes the resolution, but very soon completly turns off all outputs on graphic card (monitor goes on standby), and all I can do is reset. On the other hand, changing resolution in Unity 2D works.

that seems like a graphic driver bug rather than an unity one then

As I said, gnome shell never worked well with AMD cards. Changing resolution in 11.10 works fine in Unity 3D. In 12.04, changing resolution works fine in Unity 2D, but not in Unity 3D. So, maybe it is related to Unity in some way.
