Hi, I am the upstream maintainer of Gnometris. This appears to be a bug in fglrx. The critical warnings are harmless, as far as I know--I get them they do not cause any issues. Can you try without compositing window manager? I think that fglrx is failing to render OpenGL while compositing.

The game area is rendered, sort of. When you start a new game it will flicker and flash and do all sorts of nasty stuff.

The game works fine in TWM, Metacity, and xfwm4. This appears to be a bug in compiz.

This is a bug in fglrx, not Gnometris (or Clutter). It works fine on Intel and NVidia.

Yes, 2.28 is the first release with Clutter.

It's unfortunate that this happens, but any way to disable the clutter graphics while desktop effects are running until the fgrlx bug is fixed? As it is, it's unplayable with standard Karmic settings, and a new user would be stumped.

The open source driver uses DRI2 and is not affected by fglrx's
shortcomings. I would recommend the open source radeon driver.

Though the open source driver is good, it is unfortunately very slow compared to the proprietary driver (to the point where flash videos in full screen are not watchable).

I have the same problem on karmic with the radeon (opensource) driver and a Mobility Radeon X700 card.

Enabling KMS and subsequently dri2 solves the problem, i.e. the game area is visible again. However a similar message still comes up:

Ubuntu should be shipping radeon with KMS and DRI2 enabled. If they aren't, that's a bug.

Ubuntu must use the open source Radeon DRI2 driver or ATI must support GL-on-GL. There is no other fix.

ok, for me (and i'm a regular user, dunno what DRI2 or KMS even means) its like this:
under the preinstalled ubuntu drivers (open source i guess) gnometris is incredible slow, can't even start a game properly.
under the drivers from system->administration->hardware drivers (named: FGLRX) the game is playable and normal speed, but everytime a new piece falls from above, the playing field disappears. you have to move the piece to get it back. if you complete a row and trigger the animation, the field disappears for a very short period, until the animation starts and it gets back.
looks like something has to happen on the field to get it back.
Version: 9.1 (karmic koala) amd64
Graphics Card: radeon hd 4500 series (at least thats what lspci is telling me)

hope i could help

you really never care about user experience.

mark ubuntu as "do not support ati graphic card" if you do not want to do it.

Thanks for reporting this bug and any supporting documentation. Since this bug has enough information provided for a developer to begin work, I'm going to mark it as confirmed and let them handle it from here.

The game is installed by default in Ubuntu. The name has changed from Gnometris to Quadrapssel, however, this issue still exists for those users with an ATI video card.

Thanks for taking the time to make Ubuntu better!

This might be the same as bug 529479?
