Bug Description

Binary package hint: evolution

Evolution constantly loses connection with microsoft exchange servers. When this happens I have to restart evolution to establish connection again. This is the error message that I get when I attempt to send an e-mail and connection is lost:

Error while performing operation.

Personally I think that bug reports from here should either be automatically handed over to this Bugzilla thing, or Evolution should be thrown out of Ubuntu.

Evolution is a main default program in Ubuntu, so there should be some way of reporting bugs here. Just my two cents.

The current version in 8.04.1 is now stable for me. completely stable.
But I remember seeing the same crap oss_test_launchpad talked about, and I don't know how it resolved itself.
It seems to me that the exchange plug-in needs some attention, and maybe not just from that Novell crowd, either.
It would be effing sweet if there was competition in this area. Thunderbird-exchange-plug-in anyone?

Conversation is now moot for me. After loyally supporting Ubuntu
through 4 releases, the bugginess of ver 7 caused me to abandon it for
a Macbook.

A - I wrote something about bugs in general a while ago. Unfortunately people didn't want to hear it: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-meta/+bug/248730.

B - Just to be curious: What software do you use instead of Evolution on a Mac?

C - You quoted my email adress. I do not fancy drowning in spam email in two weeks. Would you please advise the launchpad administrators to remove my email adress and this entry. Generally, never have your email client quoting the previous post when you post to launchpad.

Ok, and now half a year has gone by, and still no one seems to care about this bug here. Ubuntu version tested here is 9.04 Alpha 5+ with all of today's updates. Evolution version is 2.25.92. Error message is the same, the only difference being that now the first half of it is in German while the second half is still in English. Btw. none of my colleagues wants to work with Ubuntu. Guess why? They cannot use Ubuntu for work with an MS Exchange server.

I can confirm this bug in Jaunty beta release (with all updates as of Apr 14). Evolution is a bloat which doesn't work at all and ubuntu keeps shipping it as the main email app for masses !

The priority should be high as it is business critical for some folks to have their email working (more so than some bootup optimization).

I have upgraded from 8.10 and I did not have an issue. This is massively annoying and may cause me to roll back to 8.10 which I really do not want to do.... I also cannot use MAPI and it is very unstable.

I havent attached any logs as I dont know what if anything would help?

I have had problems with Evolution since I started with Ubuntu 6.10. And now, I just did a completely fresh load of Jaunty and I get this bug about one in every 8-9 message ops in Evolution.

Now, I'm not saying that Ubuntu developers MUST fix this bug, but I think it is an extremely poor decision to include this kind of bug in their Ubuntu release. By definition, if you include it in your release, you are on the hook for it.

In short, if you don't intend on fixing the problem then stop including Evolution by default and frustrating people. It should either work or not be there.

Heck, why not just include Thunderbird by default, after all, for POP and IMAP it works and works well. I have relatively few problems with it.

And before anyone says "Thunderbird doesn't have good Exchange support" I would offer that with this bug neither does Evolution.

So, if anyone has potential bug fix, I would gladly test any solutions. I don't rely on Evolution, I keep a third machine at my desk just to run Outlook and MS Office to keep the coats and ties happy. So I can afford to have Evolution broken for testing.

Chuck Hamilton (chuck-hamilton) wrote : Re: [Bug 119886] Re: Jaunty, Intrepid, Hardy: Evolution loses connection with Microsoft Exchange server ("Lost connection to Evolution Exchange backend process")

Thunderbird and Evolution are two completely different things.
Thunderbird is simply email and Usenet. Evolution is a full fledged PIM
(email, shared tasks, shared calendar, shared contacts, etc.). IMO it is
a critical component of any Linux corporate desktop and must work
reliably with MS Exchange. If it doesn't, it is a show-stopper. It
worked well in Intrepid but not all in Jaunty. Evolution has been flaky
from day one. About 50% of the updates break it's connectivity with MS
Exchange. Jaunty should not have been released with a broken version of
Evolution.

Developers - please stick with working versions of critical components
like Evolution even if it means staying a version or two behind. I had
to roll back to Intrepid after installing Jaunty for one reason - a
broken version of Evolution.

The problem appears only when I try to use the calendar or the address book.
After the message appears, the only way to solve temporarily the issue is to quit the evolution, kill the processes, clear the cache and restart evolution.
It is really a problem because we are trying to use evolution as our default mail client but after upgrade to the new version, several problems appeared without solution...

I have the same problem in Ubuntu 9.04 using evolution 2.26.1. I've been using Evolution under Ubuntu for about a year, and have seen this error every couple days using Evolution constantly under Hardy and Intrepid. Under Jaunty, to which I just upgraded this week, this error occurs ALL THE TIME. I concur with Chuck Hamilton -- I'm considering rolling back to Intrepid to fix Evolution.

I started my Ubuntu journey with version 8.04 a few months back. I was thrilled to see Evolution actually work with Exchange -- with the occasional connectivity problems. I began using my Ubuntu laptop as my primary work machine (I'm in sales, so Office, Outlook and a web browser are the tools of my trade)

When I upgraded to version 8.10, I started see more frequent errors with Evolution.

This week I upgraded to version 9.04. I love this version improvements (notification systems, faster, etc) -- but Evolution is completely useless (Lost connection ... back end process ..... error) -- It crashes every minute or so.

I tried the trial version of Crossover and install Outlook 2003. It is a flaky solution at best as well. I tried the MAPI route -- no luck.

Developpers: Nice job on version 9.04. Evolution not working with Exchange is the ONLY roadblock to making Ubuntu my primary coporate machine -- but it is an absolute deal breaker. It makes evangelising Ubuntu to my colleagues very difficult!

Please throw some urgency on this issue! Thanks in advance.

PS: Can I roll back Evolution without rolling back Ubuntu? (I hope this question make sense!)

Looking into this forum it looks like this issue has been there for a long while... not motivating. Don't take me bad. The OS is great but lacks today's critical needs.

While testing 9.04 beta I encountered these problems as 9.04 Beta was
upgraded from 8.10.
But I am using 9.04 right from the date of release, And it is fresh

P.S. I do updates installation regularly and my system is always up to date

Thank You

Update on user experience running Evolution 2.26.1 on Ubuntu 9.04

Per the suggestion of rgnyman, I enabled the pre-release and unsupported updates and updated everything. Whatever was waiting in the wings appears to fix my connection problems. I have had Evolution up and running for over 2 weeks straight. I mean literally, the app has been up and running for over 2 weeks without a hiccup, cough, or even a sneeze. I am letting it stay there until an update forces a reboot and I decide to go for it.

Seems to be fixed for me now too, as of 2.26.1-0ubuntu2. (2.26.1-0ubuntu1 was the buggy package.)
