Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy. Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

There is another report at bug #580602 with more information. Since this report is older, I'll mark the other one as a duplicate.

To be clear, this is not fixed.

I don't think this is the same bug

the newer bug happened after september 2010, this bug has been reported by only one person in october 2009, after which this problem was absent

if so, it's correct that this bug is flagged as "fix released"... but otherwise only a bug triager would be able to change it

nonetheless, I added the supposed upstream bug... but now the information on the status is quite incoherent

One note. When you select the text you want to copy, the selected text is dark-gray with light-grey selection background (instead of white on orange, like everywhere in ubuntu). So maybe the problem is that selected text is somehow not active, similar to non-active window.

Ctrl+c is pretty basic, and this being broken is an easy way to scare people away from ubuntu.

I can confirm it in Ubuntu 12.04 (up-to-date):
apt-cache policy empathy
empathy:
  Installed: 3.4.2.3-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 3.4.2.3-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 3.4.2.3-0ubuntu1 0

        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     3.4.1-0ubuntu1 0

When I highlight text from a past message (either sent or received) Ctrl+C is not working. The bug is reproducible in all themes.
Both Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V combinations are working in the edit area.
Right-click an selecting Copy does work, but it's a painful process.

Empathy is great, but I find this issue very annoying and a major usability problem.

Please fix it. Thank you!

This bug is this on for me as well, Ubuntu 12.04 (and 11.10). I experience this problem since more than a year. It might sounds like minor issue, but it's actually a very big issue usability-wise.

I've had hundreds of times when I though I copy-paste properly and I didn't, because of that bug. It would be greatly appreciated if someone can investigate it and fix it.

Thanks a lot!

I also found bug #971022, which seems to be the same webkit issue referenced from the upstream GNOME bug.
