It does the same for me on Feisty up to date. I believe it needs to be compiled with xft backend support.

Changed in emacs21:
importance: Undecided → Medium
status: Unconfirmed → Confirmed

I am getting exactly the same. All the boxes and then when I try and select something from the menu it segfaults.

Attaching crash report.

I encountered the same problem with emacs 21.4.1 on Edgy (updated from Dapper). The bug report is attached.

I don't get the crash, but the font problem is there. This is only with emacs21. With emacs-snapshot it's OK. However, I can change the font from the middle-click menu and then it looks OK, but the initial font shows only boxes. This is after upgrading to Feisty.

We run LTSP thin clients. The X11 Gui version of Emacs shows boxes instead of fonts on our thin clients and our remote Nomachine sessions, but fonts appear OK on the Local X Display of the LTSP server.

Oh, I should have mentioned this is on Feisty 7.04. I hope to check it on a Gutsy Tribe 5 installation I have also.

When launching Emacs from a terminal (opening up into a GUI). This is the error message I see which leads to the menus displaying ok, but the document text area shows boxes.

On my LTSP5 installation on gutsy, this emacs21 error was caused by the local thin client image missing the xfonts-100dpi and xfonts-75dpi in the /opt/ltsp/i386/usr/share/fonts/X11 directory. As chroot /opt/ltsp/i386, I used apt-get install xfonts-100dpi (and xfonts-75dpi). There were error messages during install:

Errors were encountered while processing:
 dbus
 hal
 libgnomevfs2-0
 libgnome2-0
 libbonoboui2-0
 libgnomeui-0
 python-gnome2
 hwdb-client-common
 hwdb-client-gnome
 hal-device-manager
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

but the fonts were installed. After that, emacs worked as expected.

My configuration is different than many in that I run my ltsp client all local (like a kiosk), so I do not use the ltsp server once the image has been installed on the client.

By the way, emacs22 will work even with the font error messages. It must know better how to substitute fonts.

Maybe a bug fix would be to include 75 and 100dpi fonts in the "standard" LTSP image. Though they may have been left out to keep the image small.
