The theme is missing cache files-I think through XFCE Startup or in the package's postinstall script you need to execute the command as said in the notification error triangle message thing:
"Warning: this icon theme has no cache file. You can create this by running gtk-update- icon-cache /usr/share/ icons/elementar y-xfce- darkest in a terminal emulator.
TL;DR: add a postinst script to execute that command icon-cache /usr/share/ icons/elementar y-xfce- darkest
