I can reproduce exactly the same crash with openjdk-7. I added a task for webkit as the stacktrace suggests a segmentation fault in the libwebkitgtk C code and not in the JVM.

It is said on https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=348746 that this is a SWT bug and can be avoided by downgrading Eclipse to Helios.

Many thanks for the link, it does actually mention an easy workaround for the problem: Edit your configuration file (should be ~/.eclipse/org.eclipse.platform_3.7.0_155965261/configuration/config.ini ) and add a line:
org.eclipse.swt.browser.DefaultType=mozilla

This way the mozilla renderer instead of webkit is used (this was the default in 3.6) and the crash does no longer occur.

If there is no chance of fixing the real bug in time for Precise, I'd suggest to add this line to /etc/eclipse.ini for all users.

Thanks for the workaround. I think it will solve the problem for now.

Medium: 'A bug that has a severe impact on a non-core application.'

I looked at the fact it has a relatively easy workaround (see comment #7) and considered a 'low'- but IMHO it still deserves
a medium; it gets you straight out of the box on your first time trying to do anything.

Still occurs in Quantal:

ii eclipse 3.8.0~rc3-4ubuntu1 all Extensible Tool Platform and Java IDE
ii libwebkitgtk-1.0-0 1.8.0-0ubuntu2 amd64 Web content engine library for GTK+
ii openjdk-7-jre:amd64 7~u3-2.1.1~pre1-1ubu amd64 OpenJDK Java runtime, using Hotspot JIT

(I don't have openjdk-6 installed).

Hi,

I had noticed the bug too. But I had Web Page Editor plugin installed. After uninstall it, the problem has been solved. This was on Eclipse Juno. But Eclipse Kepler also crashes but while I was working, just immediately shutting down without any reason.

The problem on Eclipse crashes when Welcome tab close:
- Eclipse Juno ver. 4.2.2 with
- Web Page Editor ver: 2.4.0.v201301161500-479-9oB58E588N8K55, identifier: org.eclipse.jst.webpageeditor.feature.feature.group

So uninstall "Web Page Editor" and see if it helps.
