Do you have eclipse-pde installed?

Yes. I believe eclipse-pde is installed automatically with eclipse-jdt. Note, as well, that after removing the Ubuntu package, the package from eclipse.org works perfectly. These issues appear to be introduced by the Ubuntu package. (In fact, why shouldn't the Ubuntu package at least nearly resemble the Eclipse JDT download from Eclipse.org in the first place?)

Which plugin did you want to install? Can you rename or remove ~/.eclipse and try to install the plugin again?

I tried a variety of plug-ins (Subversive from the Eclipse repository, Motodev and third-party plugs) and got the same error. I had removed the eclipse directory, yes, and got the same issue.

Hi

eclipse-jdt is automatically installed with eclipse-pde (but not the
other way around). The Ubuntu eclipse will however not auto-fetch
eclipse-pde if it is not installed (which is why you saw the "cannot
find org.eclipse.pde") because we have it in a separate package.

Yes, I can also verify that this is reproducible after installing eclipse-pde.

Bug is gone for me after adding package 'eclipse-pde', package naming 'eclipse' and removing ~/.eclipse folder.

i can confirm that this is happening on Ubuntu 10.4. Before i explicitly installed eclipse-pde, installations were breaking. It seems to me to be pretty pointless to require an extra package (eclipse-pde) in order for eclipse to be able to do one of its core functions. Core functionality == core package.

The problem for me was that I installed "Eclipse Integrated Development Environment" in synaptic. When I installed "eclipse" the problem was solved.
This is insanely non-intuitive. Why are there two packages? Can we make "Eclipse Integrated Development Environment" install "eclipse"?

Wasted lots of time before stumbling on this. This is most unhelpful and needs to be fixed.

Some issues with very similar symptoms to this may be caused by bug #655833 "Eclipse Foundation Code-signing certificate chain not trusted".

I had same problem, fixed after installing eclipse-jde

had eclipse-jde already installed, but not eclipse-pde. Pulling that in solved the problem (and unblocked the pydev install for me).

I am running Kubuntu 14.04 32-bit as a Guest OS in Virtual Box 4.3.x on a Windows 7 64-bit Host.

I installed Eclipse Java EE IDE for Web Developers -- Version: Luna Release (4.4.0) -- Build id: 20140612-0600.

I added (in order) Code Recommenders (all) -- then WindowBuilder (all) -- Dynamic Lang Toolkit (all).

I restarted after each completed successfully.

Then I tried to add PHP Development Tools (PDT) -- and the install failed with something like:

"The artifact file for osgi.bundle,org.eclipse.php.formatter.ui,3.3.0.201406110111 was not found."

Once I added the Eclipse plug-in development environment -- PDE --

I restarted and then installed PHP Development Tools (PDT) and it worked as expected.

I hope that this helps anyone with similar problems.
