dpkg reports invalid character in version number on package 'compiz'

Bug Description
When performing package related operations I get a warning about an invalid character in version number. For example:
$ dpkg -l compiz
dpkg-query: warning: parsing file '/var/lib/
error in 'Version' field string '1:0.9.

I am running 16.04:
$ lsb_release -rd
