this bug was filling up syslog at a rate of 1MB per Second this could fill up a disk really quickly

hence the URGENT label

I have stopped the logs from filling up fast by purge resolvconf and reinstalling it

# service network-manager stop

# dpkg --force-all --purge resolvconf

# apt-get install resolvconf

# service network-manager start

[REBOOT REQUIRED HERE]

First, it appears that NetworkManager doesn't handle the error well and retries without sleeping. Needs fixing.

Separate issue: Why is the error occurring on your machine? Why do you get "dnsmasq[30613]: failed to create listening socket for 127.0.1.1: Address already in use"?

(syslog is quiet)

(syslog is flooded to bat shit crazy)

(problem found but not solved!!!!!!)

Do you have the "dnsmasq" package installed and is the instance of the dnsmasq program started by the "dnsmasq" package configured to listen at 127.0.1.1?

This appears to be a conflict between network-manager's integration with dnsmasq-base, and the dnsmasq package.

If there isn't a specific reason for the dnsmasq package to be installed on your system, the straightforward workaround is to remove dnsmasq with 'apt purge dnsmasq'.

I resolved this by disabling the dnsmasq plugin in /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf, as I wanted to keep my own dnsmasq configuration.
