Bug Description

Binary package hint: network-manager

I'm using ubuntu intrepid on a laptop using sky2 module for the ethernet connectins. Having NetworkManager started I'm unable to connect to a wired network, this the syslog messages connected:

Nov 5 09:24:45 nbvolpi dhclient:
Nov 5 09:24:46 nbvolpi dhclient: Listening on LPF/eth0/00:01:4a:f5:ed:4f

Nov 5 09:24:50 nbvolpi chipcardd[5563]: devicemanager.c: 3373: Changes in hardware list
Nov 5 09:24:52 nbvolpi dhclient: DHCPREQUEST of 192.168.1.253 on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67
Nov 5 09:24:52 nbvolpi dhclient: send_packet: Message too long
Nov 5 09:24:58 nbvolpi NetworkManager: <WARN> nm_signal_handler(): Caught signal 15, shutting down normally.
Nov 5 09:24:58 nbvolpi NetworkManager: <info> (eth0): now unmanaged

I'm unable to use dhclient also after I have stopped the NetworkManager service.

The only way I have to connect to the network is to disable the NetworkManager, restart the system, and to connect to the network by hand.

A very annoying bug.

I have a similar problem, though I am able to connect as long as I connect manually. My package information:

$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 8.10
Release: 8.10

$ apt-cache policy network-manager
network-manager:
  Installed: 0.7~~svn20081018t105859-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 0.7~~svn20081018t105859-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 0.7~~svn20081018t105859-0ubuntu1 0
        500 http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com intrepid/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

When I go into the connection editor:

$ nm-connection-editor

(nm-connection-editor:12157): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_hash_table_foreach: assertion `hash_table != NULL' failed
** Message: nm_connection_list_new: failed to load VPN plugins: Couldn't read VPN .name files directory /etc/NetworkManager/VPN.

** (nm-connection-editor:12157): WARNING **: No connections defined

** (nm-connection-editor:12157): WARNING **: <WARN> constructor(): Invalid connection: 'NMSettingWireless' / 'ssid' invalid: 2

(nm-connection-editor:12157): Gtk-WARNING **: GtkSpinButton: setting an adjustment with non-zero page size is deprecated

That Gtk_WARNING happens whenever I try to edit or delete the default connection "Ifupdown"

Tyler, this bug is unrelated. try to clean your configurations from /etc/network/interfaces ... that probably should help (or open a NEW bug)

does this happen in all network enviironments? maybe its a problem with your dhcp server? Did you do any special dhcp configurations in /etc/ at some point ?

my /etc/network/interface looks already clean:

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

iface ppp0 inet ppp
provider ppp0

auto ppp0

lugburzm the other comment was directed to Tyler. in your config the ppp stuff might hurt.

Ack, sorry, I really didn't mean to hijack this, I thought maybe it was related since they had similar symptoms. Sorry again, I will create a new bug under dhcp.
