Bug Description

EDIT: I _thought_ nvidia drivers had not been installed, because when I wrote "nvidia" in the dash searchbox, nothing showed up, while I was used to seeing "Nvidia X-server Settings" appear. Now I guess there _were_ some nvidia drivers installed, after all.

That (the fact it looked like no nvidia stuff was installed) instigated me to open a terminal and write "sudo apt-get install nvidia-current", which eventually screwed up my system completely (now when I boot and log in there's no Unity). Starting from there, I only screwed things up even more by removing nvidia-304 (thinking that would bring me back to the previous state, where everything used to work).

So the real issues are:
- you write "nvidia" into the dash search box and nothing shows up. What happened to the nvidia x-server settings application??
- "sudo apt-get install nvidia-current" screws up the system completely. I don't know what version of nvidia drivers was installed before, but (a) if it wasn't the same one, then why on earth is "current" called "current", and (b) if it is the same, then apt-get shouldn't have had any effect.

Here was the original description before I figured out the above:

I installed Ubuntu 13.04 64bit on a brand-new notebook which has an NVidia ge-force 710M.

During the installation I remember a checkbox which read something like "install additional 3rd party software" or something like that, which I checked.

Since the computer has an nvidia gpu, I expected nvidia drivers to be automatically installed during installation.
If that is not possible due to some licencing issue, then the very first thing I should see just after completing the installation should be a warning saying that the computer has a graphic card for which drivers have not been installed, and with instruction about what to do.
