Bug Description

Blueprint: https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/other-desktop-n-set-default-paper-size-correctly

Binary package hint: cups

In Ubuntu 10.4, after launching Print, the document is sent to the printer and then immediately cancelled. Exactly the same happens whether connected via USB or Ethernet.
In Ubuntu 9.10, everything works perfectly, identical configuration.
Printer is a Lexmark T640

Please supply an error_log as described in the "CUPS error_log" section of https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems

If only certain documents do not print, attach these documents to this bug report.

I can't attach an error log because I have uninstalled Lucid and installed
Karmic, otherwise it is impossible to print!
But I will install Lucid on another disk so that I can attach the log file.
It happens to all documents, whether printing from Firefox or from Open
Office

This bug affects me too. I have Ubuntu 10.04 (amd64) and also a Lexmark T640 printer (connected through the network). The problems are not specific to particular documents. I have attached the error_log file (with debugging information enabled as described here https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems) for a failed attempt to print. I don't see anything suspicious in the log file.

When I connect to the webpage of the printer, I see for a short moment 'printing canceled', then the usual 'printer ready'.

As the original poster, everything worked on Ubuntu 9.10.

I captured the print job data as descripted in the wiki. The output is PostScript and Evince can display it correctly.

Can somebody review if the debug status 'incomplete' is still accurate? If yes, which information is missing?

alex_b, I do not see anything wrong in your error_log and in your captured printout. What is the standard paper size which you are using in your printer? A4 or Letter?

Thanks Till!

You hit the nail on the head! My printer is using A4, while my programs where printing in Letter.

The issue is now resolved for me.

Thanks again!

Problem is that different programs (OpenOffice.org, GTK apps, Qt apps, CUPS, system-config-printer) do not take the default paper size from one standardized place (or do not determine the default paper size at all). Especially if you use US English as user interface language when you are not in the US this problem occurs.

Could we have a warning about incorrect paper-size setting in the UBUNTU installation notes? This could reduce the printing problems associated with pagesize and give more time to solve the underlying problems. Most users are unaware of the pagesize file but they really understand problems with printout doing 'peculiar things'. It may be simple to reset if you know the problem, but the effects of incorrect setting seem widespread and superficially unrelated. In my particular case the problem shows up with OpenOffice (LibreOfffice RC1). when printing a writer page with a colour image on it. The page prints half inch too high. (using HP 7100 ink jet), no problem in black and white using a Brother HL-5250-DN. Exporting to PDF then printing was no problem. (A4 - Letter = half inch)
So we have three problems?

1. Incorrect pagesize setting in installing UBUNTU 10.04, 10.10, 11.04? I use English-GB, live in France and use A4 except for textile ink-jet printing which is Letter (all Textile material comes from America and is not available in A4) Just discovered the pagesize setting, easy when you know the answer!
2. OpenOffice (Libreoffice) may use pagesize differently depending on page content? and /or
3. CUPS prints differently depending on printer type and print content.

So where do I report this / bug / requirement ? Keep smiling
