dac922, Did you (or could you) try the:
lpadmin -p <printer> -o pdftops-renderer-default=gs lpadmin -p <printer> -o psdebug
As I understand it, the "psdebug" option disables a bunch of compression stuff in the Ghostscript output. It seems lots of printers have really bad decompression implementations :-(
