Synaptic was not able to update crystalhd-dkms while doing an update that included the latest kernel images. Thinking that perhaps some dependencies were missed or out of order I attempted a complete uninstall and then reinstall of the crystalhd-dkms package. Neither Synaptic or Ubuntu Software Updated warn that other packages will be affected and/or uninstalled. Synaptic uninstalled a number of packages but upon reinstalling did not install anything but the crystalhd-dkms.
Currently the system will not recognize a display setting larger than 1280x1024 (5:4) it also detects 1024x768 (4:3) and 800x600 (4:3) During boot it switches between 640xXXX and 780xXXX (sorry but I never memorized the exact numbers) neither of which is detected, or at least they are not offered as an option, by the system after the window manager launches.
If anyone has insights or fixes for this situation I would be happy to try those. However as it is now I cannot go very many days before I need to grab a hard drive and start reinstalling and shifting files.
