Bug Description

The 2014-10-17.1 Alternate image for PPC runs through the installation and appears to allow creation of an encrypted LVM. However, when the installed system boots, it cannot get past unlocking the disk. The error is "cryptsetup:
failed, bad password or options?" What should have happened is that the password is accepted and the disk is unencrypted.

What sort of hardware is this on?

Also, is there any way I could get a copy of the initrd from that system? I'd ask for the d-i syslog too, but I guess that's on a root filesystem you can't currently read. :P

It is on a very old Titatium PowerBook:

I'm not sure how to get the d-i syslog, since the system won't boot. The Live DVD for 14.10 does not boot, so that's out. I suppose I could see if I could get at it with the 14.04 Live DVD, if that works.

I've tried getting at the installed partition using the 14.04 live image. When I go to the console:

# cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sda4 foo
# mount /dev/mapper/foo /mnt

Cryptsetup accepts the decryption password ok, but mount gives the error "mount: unknown filesystem type 'LVWM2_member'"

Here is the syslog from the installation session. The disk decrypts fine manually from a working Live session.

This may be the same as bug #1362333.

(in particular, the fact that you are able to unlock the device manually points to it not being a bug with the keymap.)

I'm able to unlock it manually but not using the installed system's own tools. I have to use a Live image. But both the 14.04 and 14.10 Live images work for that. Is there some boot parameter I could use to try the installed system's own tools manually? The virtual consoles are not available until after the disk is decrypted.

The same happened to me. In my case when setting the passphrase the keyboard layout was another than later set.
For example: pass-phrase was actually pass/phrase
