Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this bug as a bug in console-setup.

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the appropriate application's "Help -> Report a Problem" menu or using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

Hello,

I have the same problem with karmic beta. If I recall correctly, this probably didn't exist in prior karmic alphas.
The version of console-setup I have here is 1.34ubuntu4

I tried downgrading console-setup to 1.34ubuntu3 (I got the source package from
LP), but that did not fix the issue.

When I downgraded console-setup to 1.34ubuntu2 and Capslock LED worked again !

So it seems that a change in 1.34ubuntu3 has caused the Capslock issue.

I'd like to note that for each of the downgrade trials, I reboot the machine after downgrade. The Capslock LED issue won't get fixed unless I reboot after I downgrade console-setup to 1.34ubuntu2.

Wierd enough though, that when I upgrade console-setup from 1.34ubuntu2 to 1.34ubuntu4, the capslock LED bug occurs even before I do a reboot.

Given the current kernel, I unfortunately don't see a way to fix this without breaking capitalisation of non-ASCII characters; having the LED not work is minor compared to that. See http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=514212 and http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7746 for some gory details.

(I'm not marking this bug "won't fix", though; it's merely blocked.)

This also affect Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. The Caps Lock led doesn't lights in console, but its capitalization works fine. In X.Org, the led worls correctly. Num Lock and Scroll Lock leds works correctly both in console and X.Org.

Please fix it! Can make confusion to some users!

This also affects Xenial. Plugging a keyboard directly into a system running Ubuntu Server 16.04.2 with the 4.8 kernel (and 4.10) fails to illuminate the Caps Lock light on any USB keyboards tried, but the actual function of the key works.

Just lost an afternoon thanks to that. This introduces fun bugs with QEMU and remote viewers because the VM can't tell that it has the capslock led on (since it's not really) leading to the state blinking when the viewer tries to sync it.
