Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/953386/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

I would guess its compipz or unity, but im not 100% sure.
Changing it to compiz, because compizconfig-settings-manager handles the keybinding settings.

affects: ubuntu → compiz (Ubuntu)

This is very surprising behaviour, although perhaps the switcher relies on Unity components being "active" somehow. I noticed that with the HUD key disabled (as per the original report), if I go into the workspace switcher, alt+tab combination then works. So I expect on the back end there is a logical reason for disabling the HUD key binding breaking the Window switcher, from a user's perspective, this does not make sense. Disabling the HUD key should not break the window switcher.

putting aside whether this is advised or supported the option to disable Hud or change the binding does exist.
Doing so also breaks in addition to tab -
Alt+ F1, F2, F4, F10, space, grave, maybe more

Using the "alt" key for the HUD also breaks things like alt+tab in a VirtualBox VM:

Reproduce by:
* Create a VM with a guest that uses the alt+tab to switch windows (e.g. Windows, Ubuntu etc.)
* Boot it
* Launch two programs
* Try and alt tab between

What happens:
Seemingly randomly, the HUD appears and takes focus away from the VM.

My issue is not with the HUD existing, my issue is with the fact I can't remove the "Alt" key to show it without affecting alt+tab.

I am also getting the virtualbox/hud issue from the previous post (#6 - Jamesasgrim)

The problem is that HUD should not be coming up in Virtualbox. It makes it painful to operate in windows without being able to use alt+tab to switch between windows in a windows 7 vm. More importantly, even when the Virtualbox VM is running in full-screen mode, somehow HUD still gets triggered from within the VM when an alt+tab is pressed. This is not a normal operation and should only occur once the right control key is pressed, which pulls the mouse away from the VM.
