Bug Description
Binary package hint: compiz
I've been successfully using compiz & beryl on my machine in Feisty and Gutsy, but it's deliberately disabled in Hardy:
#don't run on laptops using ati driver
if laptop-detect; then
While there may be defects with some platforms, I think my laptop has been hit with an overbroad blacklist.
My chipset is:
ATI Technologies Inc Radeon RV250 [Mobility FireGL 9000] (rev 02)

Same here. It does work if I use the binary driver, but I've never had any problems before with the opensource one.
Seen lots of bugs about X300 causing crashes etc, so I can understand why its disabled. However it would be nice if it told you the reason why (rather than turning on effects failed - this could mean anything), and maybe gave you the option to turn it on anyway (at your own risk).
