Cheese has horrendous frame rate when recording video

I am running on a Dell XPS with i7 CPU 1.73GHz and 8Gb of ram. This laptop contains a HD video camera. When i try record video with Cheese at a medium or high resolution the video is extremely choppy and looks terrible. Lower resolutions work yet those are pointless
