Bug Description

Binary package hint: cheese

Using Jaunty on a sony vaio laptop VGN-FE31H, cheese crashes when trying to record a video with the following message:

"** Message: Error: Le flux ne contient aucune donnée.
gsttypefindelement.c(786): gst_type_find_element_activate (): /GstPlayBin:play/GstDecodeBin:decodebin0/GstTypeFindElement:typefind:
Can't typefind empty stream

** (cheese:13098): WARNING **: could not generate thumbnail for /home/valerie/Vidéos/Webcam/2009-05-16-210337.ogv (video/ogg)
"

More specifically:
- The video is displayed fine
- When the record button is pressed, the image turn greenish and the program crashes.
The only way to abort the program is to kill the process.

I successfully could record video on the same laptop using wxCam with the type of image set to YUYV (in case it helps). Also gstreamer-properties doesn't return any error, and displays the video correctly if I use l4v2. If I try using l4v1 the image turns green and freezes.

Here is the version of cheese used:
apt-cache policy cheese
cheese:
  Installé : 2.26.0-0ubuntu1
  Candidat : 2.26.0-0ubuntu1
 Table de version :
 *** 2.26.0-0ubuntu1 0
        500 http://fr.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/universe Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Finally I'd like to add that the exact same problem occured to another person:
http://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/viewtopic.php?pid=2644824

Update: I found that I could not record sound using the default app bundled with jaunty (can't rememeber the name). After playing a while with Alsa settings I finally got it working. One of the configuration problems was that the recording source was set to PCM instead of the internal microphone.

When that worked I found that I could record video with sound with no problems using cheese. So it seems that Cheese did hang when it couldn't capture the audio. This shouldn't happen, instead a warning could be displayed saying that no audio will be captured and explaining how to fix this.

I can confirm this issue... When i try to record a video with cheese and a Microsoft LifeCam Cinema, cheese crashes immediately without a traceout on the shell...

After i kill the process and restart Cheese I get these messages

I think they are caused by the bad video file. My system says about the webcam the following...

I'm having the same problem with cheese v. 2.28.1 under karmic. For me, when I hit 'record video' the display window goes black (no green tinge) and the Cheese window is still responsive. But when I hit 'stop recording' the program seizes up tight.

If I run from the command line, I get get the following konsole message when I 'Start Recording':

** (cheese:21316): WARNING **: No GConf default audio src key and alsasrc doesn't work

The symptoms I had where different but seem to be related to the same cause. In my case I fixed the bug fiddling around with the alsa settings until it no longer hanged. Now it works properly. Your problem seems to be audio related as well.
What I did to fond what to fix was that I installed a different video recorder program that I had to compile myself (cant remember the name...) that could record video even when audio failed. There I played with the audio settings until I found what to use, then put the same settings in the alsa conf.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue for you. Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

Well, I installed Karmic koala (9.10) since, and it workes out of the box, as well as skype. So I don't know what fixed the problem, only that the problem is no longer in 9.10.
